Ceramic imitations of plastic furniture imitate Shang ritual bronzes, 2022, wood-fired ceramic, chair: 11 x 16 x 13 inches, stool: 20 x 15 x 12 inches

My parents were refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia, escaping war and genocide with their families and nothing but the clothing on their backs. We never had family heirlooms, or artifacts passed down from generation to generation. Few things survive the destruction wrought by war. These plastic chairs are my family’s artifacts. They are mass-produced, injection molded, and ubiquitous at family gatherings around Taoist rituals and funerals. Utility, durability, scalability, and plastic are holy in my mind.
