BURNING FAKE MONEY ON A LASER CUTTER TO COMMUNE WITH MY DECEASED GRANDMOTHER, 2019, installation & performance, hand-tufted wool rug, etched joss paper strung on trellis of bamboo & plastic garden twine, 5 x 8 feet
The laser cutter, a cornerstone of makerspaces for individuals to start their own small production businesses, is reinterpreted as means of ritual ancestral worship. Chinese hell currency isn’t burnt to provide money for my grandmother to survive in a capitalist afterlife. Instead, the precision of a laser cutter is used to burn messages -- apologies for acting upon intergenerational trauma, for valuing assimilation over family, and for a culture that considers others alien.
